To meme or not to meme

After taking a look at The Daily Meme and the every so dependable Wikipedia article, I have come to a somewhat better understanding of what memes are.

I think about memes constantly evolving and replicating based on the audience. I feel we create these memes based on our thoughts, opinions, and interests, but they replicate based on other people’s perceptions and constantly evolved into something new for everyone.

An example of a meme that I particularly enjoy is the creation of “Kittens inspired by Kittens” found on YouTube. I spend endless hours YouTube surfing and inadvertantly stumbled across this video.

The meme began to develop as others made their own videos of ‘kittens’ inspired by whatever they desired. There are a few paradies, but most commonly they are original reproductions of what, essentially, inspired them to find a new inspiration for kittens.

After discover the many vidoes, I immediately posted links to friends facebook walls and posted links to my wall. I wanted everyone to know about kittens.

I feel like a lot of memes have come out of YouTube. Several videos have made it onto to broadcast television. The rapid dissemination of these videos ignites instant popularity among the people leading them to create their own versions of these memes.

more to come.
