The Soundtrack of My Life
Stumbled across this music meme online this afternoon. Thought I’d take a shot at it and see how truthful this soundtrack will be. Knowing the eccentricity of my iTunes, this ought to be fun. Promise, I have not altered my shuffle at all. This will define me, and I find that somewhat scary.
The Soundtrack of My Life:

According to this meme, these albums define my life.
Opening Credits
“End it On This” by No Doubt: from their debut album, Tragic Kingdom, this is a song about breaking up with one last kiss. Hmm, this isn’t getting off to a good start. This should definitely be the breakup song. Oh well.
Waking Up
“Something Like You” by ‘N Sync: Wow, this is super embarrassing. Yes, I do have quite the extensive collection of boy bands in my iTunes. I guess this would be a good song to wake up. Help build my self-esteem that’s for sure, hah!
First Day at School
“Can You Feel It” by Timmy Curran: A former surfer gone singer/songwriter professes his love after losing a lover. Hmm, yet again a puzzling song that doesn’t follow the pattern of this meme. I mean, I will always remember the way school “felt.” Havin started the last first day of school this semester, I can definitely feel it. Knowing that I will never have another first day of school is a bittersweet feeling that I will cherish forever.
Falling In Love
“OK Alone” by Gabriel Mann: This was a free download on some song package, but it totally describes my thoughts of falling in love. I’m a cynic. I don’t believe in love. I’ve got a jaded view, but I’m okay with it. I’m okay with being alone. This song is about letting your card down, falling in love, then finding out that love isn’t reciprocated as your significant other is “handing out candy valentines all over town.” I’ve only been surround by “repeater letdowns.”
Losing Virginity
“Inches and Falling” by The Format: AAHAHAHA! A high school favorite of mine. I cannot escape who I was in high school because my iTunes will constantly remind me. The tagline of the song, “I love love. I love being in love.” Hah.
Fight Song
“knives out” by Radiohead: enough said.
Breaking Up
“Paint’s Peeling” by Rilo Kiley: I think this song pretty much sums out how I feel after a brutal break up. Like I said before, I always give too much and end up getting hurt. With lyrics like “And I feel nothing, not brave…It’s a hard day for breathing again” this song is true to way I have felt after a break up. Pitiful, I know.
Prom
“Sorry So Sorry” by Howie Day: How convenient. I was obsessed with Howie Day in high school. This song doesn’t quite relate to the immaturity of high school and the extravagance that is prom, but it’s opening line “Spend your nights here, we’ll always be up late. Keep each other on, chemicals can make us stay” sort of relates to the cliche of prom night.
Mental Breakdown
“Lady” by Regina Spektor: The song opens about a lady singing the blues about tragedies in society, and how she can make the audience feel certain things. “I can sing this song so blue that you will cry.” I’d say the haunting low piano notes are similar to the feeling of a mental breakdown I would have when I hate one, God forbid.
Driving
“Never Let You Down” by The Verve Pipe: Yes! Yet another high school song which goes perfectly with driving. I learned to drive my sophomore year in high school and was the first among my friends to get my license, which meant I was stuck carpooling everyone around. The upbeat, catchiness of this song is definitely driving. This meme is starting to actually work out!
Flashback
“The Archers Bows Have Broken” by Brand New: Definitely a flashback in this song. Brand New was one of my favorite bands in high school. My friends and I would sit around in the auditorium during lunch singing Brand New songs while Taylor played the guitar. Such a flashback!
Getting Back Together
“What if God Was One of Us” by Joan Osbourne: Hmm, not so sure how this is getting back together, but I can relate it somehow. I suppose we are all human, and through time, we realize the selfish mistakes we make in relationships. Time apart helps us to realize this and then we get back together. Sure, that works. What would I know? I’m a repeat failure of relationships.
Wedding
“Coochie” by some rap artists: Wow, this is embarrassing. If you’re wondering what song this is think of a chipmunk singing “coo-coo-ca-coo-coo-ca-coo-ca-chee yeaaaa, I love being a woman.” Is it coming back to you?? No, then I am really embarrassed. This would be my wedding song.
Birth of Child
“Naked In The Rain” by Red Hot Chili Peppers: Well, this is probably how the baby came to be. Sure, I’ll go along with it.
Final Battle
“Still Take You Home” by Arctic Monkeys: With a tagline of “What do you know? You know nothing! But I’ll still take you home” this song definitely describes me in the final battle. And, I interpret battle here to be a fight with a significant other. I’ll put up a fight at first, but then I’m won over eventually; I always succumb.
Death Scene
“Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson: Oh the irony. If I had to go, I’d like to go in style that’s for sure. Also ironic, my friends call me Allie Jean (Allie is short for Allison, and yes, Jean is my middle name). Enough said.
Funeral Song
“XR2″ by M.I.A.: This song is definitely upbeat and easy to dance to which is what I want my funeral to be: one big dance party celebration. I want people to remember the fun times they had with me probably with a beer in hand. No sermons. Just remembrance, good music, food, and beer will be at my funeral. Very non-traditional. I grew up in a funeral home, so I think they are uber creepy!
End Credits
“Don’t Forget” by Brett Dennen: This song perfectly sums up the ending credits of life. “Don’t forget that I believe in you.” I firmly stand behind my family and friends at all times. Even when I’m gone, I will still be there for my loved ones.
So, this meme worked out surprisingly well. It was a lot of fun for me to go through my iTunes and incorporate each song into my life (I mean, it was already in my life, but to revisit its meaning to me). I suggest you all create a soundtrack of your life.
